When the inner parts of the Postojna cave were discovered and opened for the visitors, Postojna started to develop into a tourist town. As soon as the southern railway was built the number of visitors of the cave increased and the first hotels were being built in the town. The period immediately following the Second World War saw a dramatic rise in the number of visitors as more and more people came to explore the cave and the town. New hotels and motels were built and shortly afterwards a campsite, and Postojna could offer over one thousand beds to its visitors beside its many restaurants, pubs and bars. The number of visitors rose to almost one million per year. The unfortunate events of the year 1991 caused the tourist flow to cease for a while, however, gradually the number of visitors grew and has today increased to over 500,000 tourists a year.
